The value of Hospitality staff
Working in our industry - hotels, restaurants, pubs, events, cruises and all the related business we never had it easy. The ones that made it through the initial years are the most hardworking, efficient and tolerant people you can wish for.
Total neglect from governments and inefficient unions, disrespectful looked at from the majority of the guest enjoying our services but never wish to trait places ( banker, insurances salesman or waiter? bah — what a question!) - we still managed with a smile - having a lot of fun - learned to ignore the discrimination of our profession and even learned to live with, bad salaries, taxes on tips, abuse from employers and the disregard from the majority of our population that wants our services - and misses it when we are gone - like during corona.
Politicians love to go in fancy restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Waving their hands like kings and Queens when entering, expecting superb service paid by the waiter, the cook, and the cleaner who are the only ones with guest like that in the same room who pay taxes - thus their meals and service. Then - maybe - receiving tips - which are taxed by the same politicians expecting the best service. They leave like Kings and Queens - nodding left and right - a little bothered by too much attention to their superb personalities. We stay behind to clean the tables - bring the garbage out and vacuum. They leave with the confidence that they did us a pleasure , a gift visiting us. We stay behind with the vacuum in hand but with integrity, respect and tolerance and pride. These are feelings they will never have - and honestly - don’t deserve.
We will be back
Now Corona made our live miserable, our income vanished and big companies use this time to further cut our salaries, income and jobs. We will overcome this too. We have to. The uncertainty makes it hard not to get depressed but now is the time to support each other. Reach out, refresh old contacts , get active on social media and talk to as many people as you can reach. We will be back if possible avoiding the new worse working, living and paying conditions companies want to force us to accept. We are of value - we will be back.
