Hope & Hospitality
If I look for reasons to get depressed I find today more than ever - day by day! But getting depressed is not only something that happens by accident or only by circumstances. It’s not something we can’t do anything about. It is also - to a certain degree - a matter of choice.
Now some will say - easy to say for him in times like this. No - it’s not easy for me either! Well - my live is hospitality - my whole live! And what I see today is hard to comprehend. Painful to see and experience. It breaks my heart - but only to a certain point. Because it is not a reason to give up!
The Corona panic left hotels, restaurants, pubs, events, clubs in a pile of rubble. A pile of rubble is a messy side but one we should clean up, build again! No choice here - and we need you!
Loosing the job, loosing income, not able to pay the apartment anymore, loosing the loan, loosing the house and not to know if you can buy a birthday gift for your wife and child will get you depressed. I was going to write a list how bad the situation is right now but this list would be too long, to sad and nothing we need right now.
What can we do?
Get active! This constant lockdowns still let you do a lot of things. Actually they free time for things you always wanted to do - but the excuse was - no time. Well Corona or the politicians who seem not to have a clue what to do - they made time for you.
Social media is one thing you are always in anyway. Why not be more active? Create your own side - find new partners to communicate?
Hobbies - from building furnitures to bird watching (only for the British) or whatever you wanted to do before - no excuses anymore. Start!
Not that I am doing it on purpose but I am still walking enough everyday! Exercise makes your body feel good ( ok - at first painfull) but it frees your mind and soul. Even just walking in nature does the job!
Contacts - just talk!
Contact your family friends and people you lost side of long ago. I talk to more people, more often and longer than before Corona and it is great! I should have done it before - you should do it now. I won’t stop ever again!
You can’t find a job that pays? Do a job that doesn’t.
Sounds stupid at first but by helping, volunteering and assisting others you are occupied and do what you did in hospitality. You make a difference! You meet people, you learn and it will advance you. It will help you and you are helping others!
Extend your network.
To see so many of my colleguages being unemployed it makes sense to connect, encourage, support, like, share and link wherever it might help someone. I want to help - I will if I can.
Because of Corona I am now separated from my wife for 7 month and still no end in sight. It doesn’t matter if your bond is as close as ours but I have to say it really pi… me off! So having problems with your family because of this long close time together - what the heck - imagine you would be separated for long! That’s by far worse. Believe me!
Tolerance and respect
Reading the news how bad people doing in India, Indonesia, China, America and other countries normally results in a short twitch with the shouldrers and a “ oh, this poor guys” - and forgotten. In hospitality these are our co workers. We know their names, have seen their family pictures and shared their memories. We shared time of our live together. We are sometimes friends and often soul mates. We respect and tolerate each other - we have a bond. It hurts us more then anybody else when we read the headlines.
Hospitality will come back and we need the young ones and the older ones!
The young have the energy, the dreams, creativity and the drive for innovations. The older ones have the experience, knowledge and the knowhow where the traps are - to warn the young and guide them around, speed up their development and enjoy seeing them succeed.
It is a time of survival
Now we have to survive but the time will come soon where we will build up hospitality again. The positive side will be that many of the companies that abused, used and exploited staff will hopefully gone down the drain. And hopefully we will all have learned to avoid them in the future! You might want to forgive - thats okay - but never forget!
Giving up is not an option!
We need you. Your creativity, personality and your drive! You are of value for your family, your company, your friends and society! You are of great value to us!
We will be back - better than before!
In the mean time reach out - connect - talk - we and I are open for it! For my part - the contacts you find below!
