Never google if you want to learn how to provide good Restaurant service

Today the internet provides us with a huge amount of information with a fast mouse click. As much information as for example Wikipedia offers we know not to trust entirely and double check as the information might be partly or totally wrong. This applies to all information and we should use common sense to question and double check as we should do with all media information we receive.

Setting a table to make sure it won’t work

Checking service on the net I get a first impression how bad the status of service must be already. When checking pictures how to set up a table I only find five correct ones out twenty pictures. To set a table correctly is not only done to make it look attractive. It is also done to allow the guest to enjoy service that works smooth, without confusion. Easy, elegant and comfortable. Setting the table right allows the waiter to provide service without disturbing the guest and be efficient, elegant and save. If someone follows only this pictures it will result in a wrong table setting that wont even work when you know the right techniques. Its like mounting the steering wheel of a car to the back seat and wondering why driving is suddenly a mess. It leads to lousy service and frustration on both sides.

Don’t touch the guest!

Worth is the experience when you search the net on how to be a good waiter. There are titles like “How to make 20% more tip” (is that the essence of good service?), and tips for waiters like “Don’t sit at the guest table, don’t touch the rim of the glass, for red wine - ask if the guest wants to serve himself, don’t touch the guest ”. The list is long and sad. Not only are some tips just wrong. My question is: Are we really that much down to the basics?
